Chargers’ 3-Game Streak Snapped After John Wood’s Late Rally

The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team’s three-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday night as John Wood rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to beat the Chargers 67-64 at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Tied at 33, sophomore Hailey Lovetinsky (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hill) hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the first half, and the Chargers (4-4) opened the second half with 15 of the first 19 points to open up a 51-37 lead.
  • Sandburg still led 58-45 early in the fourth before the Blazers (2-8) rattled off 15 straight points to go ahead. John Wood got 3s in the run from Keegan Ryan, Mykah Hurley and Lena Herrmann before Allison Moore’s steal and layup put the Blazers up 60-58 with 2:56 to play.
  • The teams traded baskets down the stretch, with Hurley’s layup at :58.9 breaking a 64-all tie. Moore split a pair of foul shots with :06.7 left for the final score. Lovetinsky’s 3-point try in the final seconds was blocked by Moore.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Lovetinsky scored a game-high 19, went 3 for 8 from 3-point range, had four rebounds and led the Chargers with three assists and three steals.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Sophomore forward Kennedy Jackson (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) scored 16 on 8-of-13 shooting and grabbed five boards.
  • Sophomore Sophie Whitford (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) scored six and had a game-best seven rebounds in her return from a knee injury.

FOR THE BLAZERS

  • Allison Moore 18 points, 7 steals
  • Sidney Miller 14 points
  • Mykah Hurley 13 points, 4 rebounds

UNI WATCH
John Wood wore the Chargers’ navy road uniforms after the Blazers left theirs on the bus and their driver took off before anyone on the team realized it. Sandburg wore its usual home gray uniforms.
